Unipart grows technology logistics business
Posted on Wednesday 14 February 2007
Unipart, one of Europe’s leading logistics companies, has won four multi-million pound long-term contracts including substantial new business with Apple and Vodafone UK.
The contracts total more than £230 million in revenue and will create hundreds of new jobs in Unipart’s logistics centres in the Midlands.
They establish Unipart as a leader in the rapidly growing and highly demanding field of technology logistics.
Unipart Group Chief Executive, John Neill, said: “We have spent 20 years building and developing the Unipart Way into the most comprehensive operational architecture which enables us to work in partnership with our clients to deliver ever improving service quality for their customers.
“The Unipart Way architecture supported by Unipart’s culture enables us to combine the agility needed to cope with massive variations in demand and rapid new product introduction with high quality customer service.
“The 300,000 square foot logistics centre in Nuneaton is growing rapidly and is expected to employ nearly a thousand people making it Britain’s biggest mobile ‘phone repair and refurbishment centre.
“Unipart has developed the capability and reputation as a lean logistics company agile enough to consistently deliver industry-leading performance.
“At Unipart we deeply understand that the end customer experience is critical. Our commercial relationship may be with Apple, Vodafone or any other of our hi-tech clients but our true customers are the ones who use their products.
“If we satisfy that end customer by the speed and accuracy of our logistics we satisfy our client companies. It’s a dual approach and if we get that customer experience right, everyone wins.
“The key to this approach is the way we have taken the lean principles and philosophy we developed and embedded in our core automotive parts manufacturing division and applied them to the supply chain.
“Codified into what we call the Unipart Way, the approach means that we achieve fantastic levels of speed and accuracy in complex supply chains.”
Nowhere is this complexity more apparent that in the 300,000sq ft integrated logistics and handset repair centre Unipart runs with Vodafone UK on the outskirts of Nuneaton, Warwickshire.
The 950 Unipart staff not only oversee the supply direct from the manufacturers of the mobile handsets themselves but bundle them across a variety of service offerings ensuring the right hardware and software goes to the customer.
The centre also deals with what is known as reverse logistics or customer returns of damaged, unwanted or faulty phones.
Unipart’s proficiency in reverse logistics has also led to major contracts with large internet retailers such as ASOS.com. And from this month (Feb)it will handle returns of the Apple iPod.
Added Mr Neill: “Reverse logistics is a key element of technology logistics because the process is crucial to end customer satisfaction.
“Consumers often say that the true test of a company is the service they receive when something goes wrong with a product.
“Because of the Unipart Way, our employees are able to work flexibly within the processes to solve the daily headaches reverse logistics throws up.
“A key Unipart Way principle is that we expect our people to solve problems at their own level. This means when the inevitable non-standard returns show up they are dealt with there and then.
“In most other operations, such problems are kicked up the management chain with delay being inevitable.”
Mr Neill also announced that Unipart Logistics has successfully concluded its work on the Boots retail supply chain programme.
Alliance Unichem Supply Chain Director Gavin Chappell said: “Unipart Logistics have helped Boots achieve significant change and helped the supply chain deliver its best ever Christmas service to our stores.
“They have a unique set of skills and capabilities that many organisations could use to make transformational change. Boots has benefited significantly from its relationship with Unipart who have helped drive our performance to even higher levels.”

Unipart launches world’s first intelligent integrated tracking system for loads and vehicles
For immediate release Jan 31, 2007
BUILDING on its leading role in logistics and commercial development of Radio Frequency Identification, (RFID) technology, Unipart Logistics is bringing to market the world’s first fully integrated RFID and GPS-enabled vehicle telematics system
For the first time logistics managers can track loads, assets, vehicles and trailers throughout the entire supply chain in real time without the need to add complex and expensive in-vehicle equipment.
The new solution, called Unipart Insight, includes hardware, software and best practice business support to turn the information into powerful and effective tools to improve efficiency, reduce costs and enhance security.
Unipart Insight also integrates with on-board communications and integrates with routing and scheduling packages, tachograph and other back office systems.
Unipart RFID expert Peter Cullen said: “Unipart Insight brings together all the benefits of Unipart best practice with RFID and GPS telematics in a fully integrated solution.
“For a long-time logistics companies have been looking for a package which will not only collect all the data they need but presents it in a way that effective business decisions can be made in terms of improving efficiency, security and reducing costs.
“We have been part-way there with RFID and telematics as separate tools but putting them together along with Unipart best practice processes and the right software means businesses can for the first time reap the full benefits of the new technology.”
Unipart has been at the forefront of developing RFID technology, running one of the world’s biggest commercial RFID-enabled projects tagging all Jaguar parts containers in its world-wide supply chain.
Closer to home, Unipart’s automotive division has been running a GPS-enabled telematics fleet of almost 1500 vehicles.
Added Peter: “The move to integrate the two technologies came from the encouraging results we achieved after merging these with Unipart best practice and our logistics expertise
“Using Unipart Insight, the unique combination of real-time and historical data means tote boxes, roll cages, containers, tractor units and trailers are automatically associated and tracked. The technology is equally effective ranging from vans to curtain-sided vehicles and trailers where security has traditionally been a huge problem.”
Unipart also offers potential customers the chance to trial the Unipart Insight solution in the safety of its Advanced Logistics Centre (ALC).
Explained Peter: “The ALC models the entire supply chain from raw material producer through distribution network to the delivery point, tracking totes, roll cages and products.
“Potential customers can use the ALC to model the whole process without any operational risk and help to establish the return on investment.”

Unipart and Vodafone sign 10 year deal
Posted on Friday 24 November 2006
Vodafone UK and Unipart Technology Logistics (UTL) have announced joint investment in a state-of-the-art facility to manage all of Vodafone UK’s handset and accessory storage plus distribution.
The multi-million pound centre, is based in Nuneaton. Employing 950 members of staff by April 2007, it will bring together logistics and returns for Vodafone’s 340-plus retail stores as well as daily returns and direct supply to customers under one roof. The centre will also deal with handset repairs and Vodafone’s control car phone fitting service.
The 10-year deal, unveiled along with the Nuneaton facility, represents the culmination of a relationship that began in 1999 when UTL was awarded a pre-sales logistics contract that centralised Vodafone’s warehousing in the UK.
Nick Read, Vodafone UK Chief Executive Officer said, “This agreement will allow Vodafone to ensure customers continue to receive a first-class differentiated service. Our integrated model with UTL allows Vodafone UK to concentrate on other business activities, leaving the logistics to a specialist partner with a proven track record.”
Unipart Group Chief Executive John Neill said: “This impressive joint facility is a very visible demonstration of the depth of the partnership which has grown between the two companies.
“Vodafone UK’s management had the foresight to see that the future of outsourcing was to move away from the traditional, lowest tender model and embrace the Unipart model, where both sides work together to continuously reduce costs while improving the experience for the customer.
“Those customers rightly expect a world-class service and the only way to consistently meet that standard is for both Vodafone UK and Unipart staff to be equally committed to outstanding customer service.”

Steady growth as profits rise at Unipart
Posted 19th May 2006
Unipart Group, one of Europe’s leading independent logistics businesses, has reported sales growth of four per cent to £1.157bn and net operating profits up seventeen per cent to £27.7 million for the year ended December 2005. The Group’s total profits before tax were £50.2million which includes a number of exceptional items.
Job creation continues to flow from Unipart’s portfolio of blue chip clients that include, Vodafone, Boots, Homebase, Halfords, Jaguar and Jessops. Vodafone not only extended its existing logistics contract by a further ten years but also awarded Unipart its UK handset repair business – set to create 350 new jobs.
Group Chief Executive John Neill said the strong growth experienced in 2005, consolidated the Group’s position as a supplier of world-class third party logistics services.
The Group’s logistics expertise is based on many years of experience in the automotive component sector and the Unipart Automotive division remains the largest independent force in the automotive aftermarket.
The ability to get parts to a customer virtually anywhere in the UK within an hour, led to a major contract to supply 250 branches of insurer Norwich Union’s wholly-owned bodyshop chain and Kwikfit extended its relationship to include the supply of catalytic converters as well as exhausts and brake components.
A key differentiator and driver of success throughout the diverse industry sectors within which the Group operates has been the enthusiastic participation of all 10,000 staff in the Unipart Way, the company’s proprietary business system, as a critical success factor in delivering continuous performance improvements to clients.
Demand from existing customers for Unipart Way consultancy services remains high with initiatives undertaken with Airbus, Securitas and First Group.
Similarly logistics consultancy services have enjoyed strong growth. The launch of a £500,000 advanced logistics model at Unipart HQ in Cowley, Oxford, has proved a successful innovation.
The world-leading 10,000 sq ft facility, which uses real-life elements from the supply chain, allows clients to model changes in software and business processes without risk and to trial new technologies such as radio frequency identification tagging.
The Group’s rail division also had an excellent year, extending its reach into overseas markets with a substantial Australian contract. Its safety light manufacturing facility also achieved its biggest ever contract win with Network Rail through its market-leading LED technology.
According to Unipart Group Chief Executive John Neill, the performance in 2005 marked deepening relationships with customers and a broadening of the range of service offerings taken up by them.
“Our customer base represents some of the fastest growing businesses in their sectors and they demand agility from us as well as world-class performance.
“It is a measure of their confidence in us that we are able to move into areas not usually associated with traditional third party logistics suppliers. The handset repair business for Vodafone is such a case in point.
“An essential factor in our success is the widespread implementation of The Unipart Way, our philosophy of working that is underpinned by a set of world-class tools and techniques for continuously improving our business. By implementing The Unipart Way broadly and deeply, we have been able to reduce costs, improve customer service and increase productivity while remaining flexible enough to relish challenges that business volatility brings our way.”

Calendar tribute to Lord Lichfield
Posted on Wednesday 30 November 2005
Renowned photographer, Patrick Lichfield, photographed 17 years of the world-famous Unipart calendars and was working on his favourite selection of images before his sudden death in November
In his own words, the idea was to produce “a best of the Unipart Calendars.” After consulting his family, Unipart has agreed to honour his memory by producing a limited edition, 2006 calendar, featuring the Lichfield Selection. This unique calendar will be made directly available to the public.
The last Lichfield Unipart Calendar will be sold to raise funds for two charities, Acorns and automotive industry charity - BEN. Lord Lichfield was the founding patron of Acorns, a Midlands-based charity which supports three children’s hospices as well as providing home-based services. He remained a committed patron and supporter until his death.
Unipart is equally committed to supporting BEN especially in 2005, its centenary year. The calendar is available directly from Unipart at a cost of £18.99 including post and packing. Cheques and postal orders only should made payable to Unipart Group and sent to Unipart Calendar Offer, Unipart House, Cowley, OX4 2PG.
Said Unipart Group Chief Executive, John Neill: “Patrick became a personal friend during his 25-year association with Unipart. His death was a sad loss for me and all his friends here.
“He was always intensely proud of his work for the Unipart Calendar which took the calendar to new heights of lyrical beauty in new and exciting directions.
“Patrick’s personal choice of photographs allows a fascinating insight into an artist’s mind. This calendar represents his journey over 17 years of shoots and is a lasting tribute to one of the greatest-ever British photographers.”
Unipart Opens Advanced Logistics Centre
Posted on Friday 3 June 2005
Unipart, one of the leading logistics and distribution companies in Europe, is to open the world’s first advanced logistics centre dedicated to improving supply chain business processes through the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology at Unipart’s million sq ft distribution facility in Oxford.
RFID can have a multitude of uses within the supply chain including helping companies to cut road miles by “tagging” loads with a code that can be read by computers. The tag on the load then tells the computer in the lorry where to go and what time to get there. This new technology can make the process of delivering goods more efficient thereby saving money for distributors and reducing the use of fuel.
To demonstrate how RFID can benefit companies, Unipart has joined with partners Intermec, SAP and Core Control to create a 3D, large-scale model of a supply chain in part of Unipart Logistics’ flagship distribution centre in Oxford.
Developed and perfected over five years, the facility is called the Global Enterprise Model (GEM). Unipart will use its 10,000 sq ft to demonstrate how RFID technology can be used to make the end-to-end supply chain, linking a raw material supplier to customer, much more efficient.
GEM simulates a real-life environment, complete with raw materials, picking systems, pallets and supermarket shelves complete with real goods, to create a clear understanding of the cost benefits of RFID technology throughout the supply chain.
The Unipart partnership is already using RFID technology with a number of its clients. As one of the largest privately owned companies in the UK, Unipart is well positioned to invest in not just the technology, but the development, training and integration of tools like RFID with world class, lean logistics. The GEM is a good example of how Unipart can bring a technical concept to life for its customers so that they identify clear benefits for their businesses.
Situating the GEM in the company’s massive distribution complex in Oxford enables visitors to see how technology processes can be linked with the tools and techniques of the Unipart Way – the company’s proprietary business system for continuous improvement and knowledge management — to bring benefits to customers such as High Street retailers, Halfords.
The Unipart headquarters site is one of the largest employers in Oxford and has been a showcase for The Unipart Way as well as the site of The Unipart U, one of the longest established corporate universities in Europe.
The GEM brings together three partners: Unipart, enterprise software specialist SAP and Intermec Technologies, which manufactures computer systems that identify, track and manage supply chain assets.
The GEM is underpinned by SAP’s RFID platform, and uses Intermec’s RFID tags, readers and printers. Visitors to the GEM can simulate advanced logistics processes and technology in a risk-free environment, to assess the benefits from RFID.
Managers, at all levels, can safely use GEM to model the benefits of RFID to their business. They can use their own software and processes which can be uploaded to the model. They can also compare and contrast Unipart tools to their existing ones. Once convinced of the cost benefits GEM can “train the trainers,” and train the staff on the ground again without putting customers and reputation at risk.
Carl Powell, General Manager of USP the Consultancy Division of Unipart Logistics, said: “With the agreement of new technical standards and the current investments being made by Tesco, M&S, Wal-Mart and other major retailers, it is evident that the roll-out of RFID in the UK is a matter of months away.
“SAP, Intermec and Unipart Logistics are working together to meet the needs of the organisations which will soon also adopt the technology.”
“The purpose of the facility is to demonstrate the real-life impact and benefits of an RFID-enabled supply chain. The facility can be used as a demonstration centre, but more importantly can be used to implement RFID trials to help build the business case for real-life implementations. The GEM brings together technology, business process and the people who will execute the work to ensure a seamless implementation and operation.
“Potential RFID investors can run their own software in the GEM to fully evaluate the benefits of RFID before implementing full-scale rollout at their own premises.”

About RFID
• RFID means the load tells the lorry where to go and what time to get there.
• By integrating with existing navigation technology, sat-nav Traffic Master, Blue Tooth etc, the load can warn drivers of hold-ups, accidents, etc and suggest diversions and let the customer know of changes to delivery times.
• The Government is committed to promote best practice with these technologies and to bring in distance pricing for lorries by 2007/8 (DfT White paper The Future of Transport, 2004, 8:9) which means increased pressure on companies to reduce “dead miles” with empty trucks or trucks which are only partly loaded or trucks which are carrying a box of paperclips left off the original order. With RFID, the load won’t let the lorry go if all the components of an order are not in place.
• It also allows groupage (goods from several companies on the same truck) and backloads so a truck does not return empty to depot but can be sent on to pick up other loads from other clients and the logistics manager knows whether distance/driver time will allow such pick-ups)
• MoD used GEM on Wednesday May 11, 2005, to model the technology in their logistics systems. Experience from WWII to Gulf War II show the value of RFID to military logistics (you can’t ship guns with the wrong bullets or no bullets with RFID) and, if the army becomes an early adopter, chip prices will fall rapidly. Also the load would be able to warn of an ambush or shelling and suggest an alternative route using sat-nav.

UNIPART REPORTS STRONG PROFIT GROWTH
Posted on Thursday 28 April 2005
The Unipart Group of Companies, one of Europe ’s leading privately–owned distribution and logistics businesses, has reported sales of £1.064bn and a net operating profit of £25.4m. After tax, interest and other charges, the Group reported a profit of £23.6m.1
In mid-year, the Group also announced that it was creating a thousand new jobs largely in its Oxford and Midlands locations.
During 2004, Unipart added to its portfolio of blue chip clients new contracts from Boots, Homebase, and Jessops. It also increased its technology client base with a new contract with BSkyB and additional business with Vodafone.2
In the automotive sector, Unipart won a 10 year extension to the prestigious Jaguar contract for a full range of global logistics services, and won an extension to the London Taxi International business. The Group also brought together its market leading distribution networks comprising the 100 year old Brown Brothers business, Partco and Unipart International under the Unipart Automotive Network brand. This network now comprises one of the largest parts distribution organisations in Europe supported by a van fleet of over 1500 vehicles, capable of getting parts virtually anywhere in the UK in under an hour.
According to Unipart Group Chief Executive John Neill, the performance in 2004 marked a turning point in the Group’s transformation from its origins as solely an automotive parts provider to a third party logistics services and consulting company operating across a range of industry sectors. In particular, Neill focused on the importance of The Unipart Way, the company’s proprietary business system, as a critical success factor in delivering continuous performance improvements to clients.
“Several years ago, we accelerated our strategic diversification that has virtually eliminated our future dependency on Rover. We adapted the deep expertise that we developed in the automotive sector to reposition Unipart Logistics’ services for high quality clients in business sectors that are growing rapidly,” said Neill.
“We have brought our company back to the level of profitability that we achieved in the late ‘90s. Our customer base has now diversified into our chosen group of industry sectors and our customers are some of the fastest growing businesses in their respective sectors.
“An essential factor in our success has been the training in the U and the widespread implementation of The Unipart Way, our philosophy of working that is underpinned by a set of world-class tools and techniques for continuously improving our business. By implementing The Unipart Way broadly and deeply, we have been able to reduce costs, improve customer service and increase productivity consistently across new and existing business.”
Unipart currently provides a range of logistics and consultancy services to clients in the retail, automotive, aerospace, IT, rail, leisure and marine sectors. It services the European automotive aftermarket through companies operating under the Unipart Automotive brand. 3
Unipart also announced today that, with its extensive experience in the automotive aftermarket, national distribution network of Unipart Automotive branches and Car Care Centres and deep understanding of the automotive supply chain, they will be in a position to either supply from stock or harness their network skills to provide a comprehensive range of replacement parts for Rover customers who may feel abandoned as a result of Rover going into administration.
“As a result of the strategic diversification, Rover’s move into administration will have virtually no impact on the Group this year,” said John Neill. “In the early ‘90s most of our employees worked on the Rover business – today it is less than a fraction of one percent and we are confident of deploying them elsewhere in the Group.
“Since disengagement from Rover, there is no direct business between UGC and MG Rover, although we manufacture fuel and exhaust systems through our joint venture companies. These arrangements were planned to conclude and the end of 2005. Although the Rover’s failure will have some impact on the joint ventures, they represent a very small part of Unipart Group.”

Reports that Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Tags could spread computer viruses were dismissed today by leading RFID technology expert, Carl Powell. (Fri Mar 17)
Carl runs Europe’s largest RFID demonstration centre at Unipart Logistics’ headquarters in Cowley, Oxford. Said Carl:
“Fears that RFID tags could cause any system to be infected by a computer virus is no different to that of any other system that has the potential to import and carry data. There would have to be fundamental flaws in the system design for this to be exploited”.
“While it is true the RFID tags are able to carry lots of information and could in theory be programmed with a virus, for viruses to work they first need to get into the system and that requires an indepth knowledge of the system”.
“Not surprisingly no software company would allow such a vulnerability. At Unipart we have constantly stressed that for RFID technology to work successfully business processes need to be designed to harness its strengths and avoid its weaknesses. Blocking potential virus infection is a basic step which all the leading exponents of RFID have taken on board.”

WINNING PROCESS FROM UNIPART SOLUTIONS PRACTICE
Posted on Tuesday 18 January 2005
Unipart Solutions Practice, (USP), the consultancy division of Unipart Logistics, has created a new tool deigned to help businesses define key projects to improve supply chain and logistics operations. The tool uses the policy deployment process to set out a series of projects and a matrix framework to capture the planned activity on a single spreadsheet.
The tool, called a Policy Deployment Matrix, has been developed and extensively tested by representatives from businesses across the Unipart group, and is part of a process that will enable boardrooms and senior management to focus on result led issues.
The Unipart approach is based on the belief that there should be no more that 10 breakthrough projects on the final listing – any more dilutes the focus and potentially leads to resource issues. To achieve this final summary of deliverables therefore, the team will often have to go through the difficult process of project de-selection. Deciding what not to do is key.
The main elements of the process are to define aims, projects, deliverables and results.
Aims: what are the strategic objectives of the plan, why is it important, what do we hope to achieve;
Projects: the actions and activities that the team are expected to complete within the plan period: the how and what.
Deliverables: the market, operational and financial deliverables that are expected to be forthcoming before the end of the planning period
Results: the project deliverables and key milestones. These should be ‘SMART’
The exercise can also be used to qualify wider issues, for example:
· To what extent each of the project actions and milestones contribute to the aims, i.e. is a strong, weak or conflicting and are there any gaps? (Area E)
· Links between the projects and the measures (area F)
· The degree of correlation between the results and the strategic aims (Area G)
· How does each deliverable support the planned area? (Area H)
· Who will do the work and the team involved? (Area I)
· Who is accountable for the delivery? (Area J)
Graham Jackson (MD of Unipart’s NRS business) says, “Policy Deployment is fundamental to setting the direction of the business, getting alignment to that direction and empowering teams to deliver the results. It is our way of getting things done and keeping our promises”

UNIPART CALENDAR BIDS RAISE £10,000 FOR EPILEPTIC CHILDREN
For release: 29 November 2004
The Unipart Calendar has earned over £10,000 for a national children’s charity as part of a gala fundraising event held in London .
The Black and White Ball was organised by the Muir Maxwell Trust, a national charity for children with epilepsy. As part of an auction hosted by TV personality Christopher Biggins, Unipart, the UK ’s largest automotive aftermarket parts distributor, donated an exclusive limited print calendar and five specially framed prints.
The Unipart glamour calendar first appeared 30 years ago and has featured pictures from the world’s most exotic locations shot by some of the top photographers of the day and has been the subject of a number of television documentaries. The 2005 Calendar continues the tradition with models photographed in stunning landscapes in the Western Cape , South Africa by photographer Nigel Riches. GQ magazine ranked the Unipart Calendar as one of the 20 best things to happen in 2004, just ahead of the new Maserati sports car.
Unipart Group Chief Executive John Neill commented: “Copies of this limited print calendar will be very rare and available only to select members of the company’s distribution network, and their closest customers. We were very pleased to be able to help raise such a substantial sum for this very worthwhile cause.”
The Muir Maxwell Trust supports children with epilepsy. Led by Ann Maxwell, the trust aims to make a practical difference to families. For example, the trust funded the development of a highly sensitive mattress alarm which can differentiate between most movements and the onset of a fit. This allows families to sleep confident that they will be alerted should a child suffer an epileptic fit. A similar device has been created for deaf parents by replacing the audio alarm with vibrations. This has enabled a number of deaf parents for the first time to care for their epileptic children at home rather than in hospital.

BSkyB SELECTS FIELD SERVICE SOLUTION FROM UNIPART TECHNOLOGY LOGISTICS & ByBox
Posted on Wednesday 22 September 2004
British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB), the leading operator of digital television platform in the UK & Ireland , has signed a three-year contract with Unipart Technology Logistics (UTL), part of the Unipart Group of Companies, to provide logistics services to its 1,000-strong field engineers, business customers and other installation partners.
BSkyB required warehousing and in-night distribution that delivered a next-day service to a nationwide combination of manned and unmanned collection points by 7.30am each morning, six days a week. It was essential that the engineers travelled less than 15km to their collection point and that all stock could be traced through a single system interface.
UTLnet is a strategic partnership between industry leaders UTL and ByBox that delivers the innovative and integrated field service platform to meet BSkyB’s requirements.
UTLnet incorporates warehousing, a dedicated distribution network to over 30 FSL’s and 14,000 dropboxes, total stock management, and reverse logistics services. With the ability to order up to 8pm for delivery by 7.30am , six days per week, UTLnet is a truly unique platform for mission-critical field service.
Asked why UTLnet was the right choice for BSkyB, Euan Smith, Head of Manufacturing and Logistics said:
“UTLnet was the only solution that could deliver what we needed, when we needed it, all in one integrated platform. We may have been able to buy each piece separately from several different suppliers, but this has disadvantages and we wanted a single point of contact.
The UTL culture was a perfect fit. We have confidence that UTL will continue to support us in delivering and developing the logistics service provided to both our customers and our field force.”
UTL’s Managing Director, Brian Marshall commented:
“We are thrilled to have won this contract with BSkyB, particularly as it recognises the unique proposition we have developed in UTLnet, and the industry leading partnership we have with ByBox. The combination of skills and competencies has enabled UTL and ByBox to lead the market in total Field Service solution through UTLnet, and shows us as key players in the technology logistics market sector”

UNIPART WINS LOGISTICS CONTRACT WITH JESSOPS
For release: 11 August 2004
Unipart has won a five year contract for warehousing and distribution for Jessops, the UK ’s leading independent high street photographic retailer.
The contact comes only weeks after Unipart announced plans to increase its workforce by over 1,000 to accommodate a wide range of new business won largely in the retail sector.
Unipart Technology Logistics (UTL), Unipart’s specialist, high technology logistics business will begin running the contract in September 2004, based at the company’s Weedon site in Northamptonshire which will be fully refurbished for Jessops.
This is the first time that Jessops have outsourced their logistics to a single provider. The contract will cover warehousing and distribution for all of Jessops’ 250-plus UK shops as well as direct-to-home fulfilment for the Jessops.com internet business. The move will allow Jessops to consolidate all logistics operations under one roof, improving the efficiency of distribution and giving the flexibility to expand operations on site to support the company’s growth plans.
Commenting on their decision, Derek Hine, Jessops’ Chief Executive said:
“Jessops has exciting plans for expansion but our existing distribution centres were not able to offer us sufficient space to cope with our current and expected growth. Working with Unipart Technology Logistics will provide us with a flexible, cost effective option with a best in class logistics provider, backed by expertise in a range of support services for our business which will give us a great deal of flexibility into the future.
“UTL’s strong customer focus and emphasis on continuous improvement will also be vital as we manage the changes required by Jessops planned growth over the next few years.”
UTL’s Managing Director, Brian Marshall commented:
“We are very excited by this new contract as this is a significant win for Unipart Technology Logistics and represents another major milestone in our development of focused solutions for the retail technology supply chain. Jessops joins a growing list of High Street retail companies such as Boots and Homebase that are working with Unipart using the tools and techniques of the Unipart Way in their businesses to help them achieve major competitive advantage.”

For release: 2 June 2004
Unipart Logistics, Unipart’s specialist supply chain management business, has won a new, ten-year contract with DIY superstore operator, Homebase. The contract, which covers warehousing and distribution of around 30% of the Homebase product range to all UK stores, will be worth £40 million over the ten-year period and will be based at Unipart Logistics’ flagship distribution centre at Cowley, Oxford .
Unipart Logistics currently works with Homebase providing fulfilment for the Mi Home offering, which was introduced last year into major stores. This project involved the development of the home enhancement product sector for Homebase and required a new service standard for the delivery of large furniture items direct to customers’ homes.
Under this new contract which establishes a 23,000 pallet import centre for Homebase products in Oxford, Unipart Logistics will be investing significantly in its Oxford distribution centre. The new business will create around 100 new jobs in Oxford , part of the 1,000 new jobs that Unipart will be recruiting for its major distribution centres over the next 12 months, to support the expansion of new business contracts.
Commenting on the contract award, Nigel Basey, Head of Distribution at Homebase said:

David Whale, Director and General Manager of Unipart Logistics’ Automotive and Industrial business unit said of the new contract win:
“This contract builds on Unipart Logistics’ growing expertise in the retail sector - an area of strong growth for the company - and adds to our list of blue-chip retail clients.

UNIPART SHOWS HOW PRODUCTIVITY CREATES JOBS
Secretary of State Patricia Hewitt visits Unipart’s Oxford headquarters
For release: 26 May 2004
Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, the Rt. Hon. Patricia Hewitt MP, today visited the Unipart Group’s headquarters in Oxford to see how productivity improvements have created 1,000 new jobs within the logistics company.
Unipart is one of the largest privately-owned companies in the UK . When the Secretary of State toured Unipart, she saw how productivity improvements have helped the company to win new logistics contracts with leading companies such as Boots, Halfords, Homebase and Vodafone. As a result, the company has launched a massive drive for new employees.
In Unipart’s national distribution centre, Mrs. Hewitt also saw how shop floor employees re-engineered operations resulting in significantly improved productivity and a cash savings of over £1.5m.
“Ten years ago we opened the Unipart U, our in-house university,” said Unipart Group CEO John Neill. “Since then, we’ve been embedding a philosophy of continuous improvement across the Group. The change programme at Oxford is just one example of how people across our company are working to increase our competitiveness and win new business.
“The lessons we’ve learned can be used by any organisation with the commitment and knowledge of how to improve rapidly. If you applied them to the public sector, which has come under a great deal of criticism recently, it could save the taxpayer billions and improve services significantly.”
Speaking at the visit, Trade and Industry Secretary, Patricia Hewitt commented:
“Companies in the UK face fierce competition globally and have a continual battle to stay ahead. By learning how to really capture and exploit to the full extent the latent knowledge and creativity within an organisation and by raising the skills level in the employee base, Unipart has shown how UK companies can compete in a fast changing environment and generate competitive advantage.”
Background:
Ms. Hewitt met Unipart employees and learned first hand about the major change programme that has been carried out in Unipart National Distribution Centre in Oxford
“The Cowley distribution centre was already an extremely efficient operation,” said John Robinson, Operations Manager at the Cowley distribution centre, “but we were able to reduce costs by over £1.5m and to accommodate new a new client from the retail sector. We have had to use the creativity of all of our employees and harness the best learning and knowledge from across the whole organisation to achieve this.”
The Cowley distribution centre team were coached by Unipart’s own Continuous Improvement experts, who trained and guided them during this period.
But re-designing processes was just the start of both the project and the cost savings, as John Robinson explained.
“The key element for us was working with the teams to create new ways of doing things and then making sure that the improvements would be sustained within the business. That meant using the learning tools that had been developed and used in the Unipart ‘U’ to enable people to understand why we were making changes to the way they worked. The learning process also gave them the confidence and motivation to make sure that the changes were successful.”
During the visit Ms Hewitt was also shown Unipart’s Global Control Centre, which has been developed specifically to manage the parts and accessories business for Jaguar Cars. Using this control centre teams can monitor activity across the whole supply chain – from the factory right to the dealer who needs a replacement part for a Jaguar. The Global Control Centre enables Unipart to predict any problems that might arise in the supply chain and take immediate action to make sure that no Jaguar driver anywhere in the world is left without a vehicle because the dealer cannot get a part.
“The control centre allows us to view the global supply chain broadly but also gives us the ability to drill down to give us a deep understanding of any part of the process.” said Nick Rayner, Director and General Manager of the Unipart Automotive Logistics Business Unit, “This breadth and depth of knowledge allows us to be very accurate and efficient in our process control and deliver a world class logistics service to our customer.”
Ms Hewitt was then shown how Unipart has successfully transferred knowledge and new levels of best practice to other companies. This process has been so successful that the Group’s knowledge management specialists, Unipart Advanced Learning Systems now offer consultancy services in change management, and the implementation of sustainable change, alongside e-learning consultancy and solutions, to external companies.
During the visit Ms. Hewitt saw an excellent example of how the knowledge and skills are being transferred through the ‘University on the Shop Floor’ project within the Ceramics Industry. Experts from UALS are working with the Ceramics Industry Forum and the Association for Ceramic Training and Development on this project using Unipart’s experience in learning and knowledge management and adapting it to create a learning network for the ceramic industry. The project is also being supported by Advantage West Midlands who have been a keen supporter of other competitiveness projects for the ceramics industry.
Established just a year ago the ‘University on the Shopfloor’ is the first learning network to be established on an industry-wide basis. Initially the project worked with five companies within the ceramics industry, setting up company learning centres, developing IT training programmes, introducing knowledge management skills and training continuous improvement teams. Other companies are now starting to join up as the project enters its second year.

UNIPART EMPLOYEES RAISE £73,000 FOR BARNARDO’S
Posted on Tuesday 21 October 2003
Unipart employees are shown receiving a certificate from Barnardo’s to mark their achievement of raising £73,000 through payroll giving. Unipart has been a supporter of the Barnardo’s children’s charity for over 16 years and has been involved in support through payroll giving since 1991.
Pictured are employees from Unipart’s Cowley warehouse together with Debbie Daly, Unipart’s PR manager receiving the certificate on behalf of employees from Sue Redhead, Barnardo’s Business Fundraiser for the Midlands region.
Speaking at the certificate presentation Sue Redhead said:
“Unipart is an ideal example of how companies can involve employees with the community. Lots of small amounts from payroll giving quickly mount up to significant sums, and as Barnardo’s has a policy of spending funds raised in the areas where the money was donated, employees can be sure that their gifts will benefit the community in which they live and work. The money goes towards Barnardo’s 45 community-based services that help children and families overcome some of today’s most urgent childcare issues.”

CBI CHIEF SEES HOW UNIPART DRIVES PRODUCTIVITY THROUGH LEARNING
For release: 31st January 2003
Digby Jones, Director General of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) today visited the Unipart Group’s headquarters in Cowley to see how this cutting edge UK company, drives productivity through its learning programmes. The Director General was shown how one team within Unipart’s already highly efficient flagship distribution centre at Cowley, used continuous improvement tools and techniques to achieve savings of over half a million pounds in the last twelve months. He also learned how the company has been able to codify the tools and techniques that led to these improvements and replicate them in other businesses both inside and outside the Unipart Group.
Digby Jones was introduced to the team who explained how they used Unipart’s specifically developed continuous improvement tools and techniques to re-engineer operations over the short time period thereby improving productivity and reducing cost.
“The Cowley distribution centre was already operating at near World Class standards by any measures,” said Keith Jones, MD of Unipart’s Logistics division, “but the team wasn’t satisfied with this. We set out to make improvements with clear targets in mind, but in order to achieve our goals we have had to use the creativity of all of our employees and harness the best learning and knowledge from across the whole organisation.”
The Cowley distribution centre team studied recent changes made by colleagues at another of Unipart’s distribution centres in Baginton that were specifically designed to improve the handling of fast-moving products. They were coached by Unipart’s own Continuous Improvement experts, who trained and guided them during this period.
“We used these new techniques to look at four key areas within this contract where there were complex processes that involved a large number of employees,” explained Keith Jones. “The guidance and support of the continuous improvement engineers allowed the team to refine existing measurements and adopt new standardised processes, making aspects of these processes more efficient.”
But redesigning processes was just the start of the project and the cost savings, as Keith Jones explained. “The key element for us was working with the teams to create new ways of doing things and then making sure that the changes would be sustained within the business. That meant using the learning tools that had been developed and used in the Unipart ‘U’ to enable people to understand why we were making changes to the way they worked. The learning process also gave them the confidence and motivation to make sure that the changes were successful.”
Speaking at the visit, CBI Director-General, Digby Jones commented
“The gap between UK productivity and that of our major European competitors has been a problem for decades. There is no single solution but raising skills at all levels is vital to improving our future competitiveness. Around the world no-one is standing still and nor should we.
“The UK will never again compete on cost alone. Our future success lies with a highly skilled workforce providing innovative, high-value goods and services that command a premium in global markets.
“But it’s a joint effort. I applaud employers who invest in their staff and employees who work to develop their own abilities.”
Mr Jones also learned how Unipart has successfully transferred knowledge and new levels of best practice to other companies. This process has been so successful that the Group’s Knowledge Management specialists, Unipart Advanced Learning Systems now offer consultancy services in change management, and the implementation of sustainable change, alongside e-learning consultancy and solutions to external companies.
During the visit Mr Jones saw an excellent example of how the knowledge and skills might transfer. He met Sue Evans, Chief Executive of the Ceramic Industry Forum and Peter McCarthy, Chairman of the Association for Ceramic Training and Development, who were here for a project meeting of the ceramic industry ‘University on the Shopfloor’. Experts from UALS are working with these two organisations on this project exploring how Unipart’s experience in learning and knowledge management could be adapted for the ceramic industry. The project is also being supported by Advantage West Midlands who have been a keen supporter of other competitiveness projects for the ceramics industry.
Sue Evans explained to Digby Jones how working with Unipart could benefit companies in the ceramic industry sector.
“Like every industry, the ceramic sector in the UK faces fierce competition globally and it is a continual battle to stay ahead. We recognise that learning and knowledge management is instrumental in creating competitive advantage for ceramic companies and we have looked at various best practice examples of how this could be implemented. When we went to see the Unipart learning model we were convinced that this would be right for the ceramic industry. The tools and techniques were clearly totally transferable to other industries and we could see that much of the learning model could also be adapted for our industry sector.
We believe that if we can create a ceramics ‘University on the Shopfloor’ it will be one of the key activities increasing productivity, improving quality, and driving higher levels of customer service for UK Ceramic companies.”

Editors notes:
Unipart has long been at the forefront of organisational learning within the UK, creating its own corporate university, the Unipart ‘U’ in 1993 to train and inspire its employees to achieve World Class performance within its business operations. The learning and knowledge produced over the last decade or more through the Unipart ‘U’ has resulted in the development of Unipart’s own highly effective tools and techniques to create continual productivity improvements. These tools and techniques are part of the culture within the organisation and are known as the Unipart Way.
Unipart Advanced Learning Systems (UALS) was established to extend the knowledge, skills and experience created by the Unipart U - the company’s in-house university, to other organisations. UALS helps clients to implement sustainable organisational change. In its client organisations, it creates new strategic capabilities that continually increase productivity, reduce costs and improve quality.
UALS delivers sustainable change to its clients via a three-pronged approach:
consultancy, to give the client a clear route map from strategic vision to sustainable change
learning, delivered through classroom or electronically delivered courses
Knowledge management, to collect and disseminate best practice and operational information.
